Thunderbird Field II was founded on June 22, 1942. It was a desolate desert Army Air Corps basic training facility for pilots in World War II. It became Scottsdale Airport — SDL. In 1966 the airfield was acquired by the City of Scottsdale. And, the first business jets landed in August, 1967.

Scottsdale Airport Now
Today Scottsdale Airport cruises at Mach .90. It hosts a legion of aircraft, from single engine recreational planes to corporate jets. It’s a premier US general aviation single-runway airport. And, boasting 7 miles of taxiway, it’s one of the busiest Arizona corporate airports.
SDL offers easy access to our famous annual events like the WM Phoenix Open and Barrett-Jackson car auction. And elite flyers love SDL’s top-flight services.
SDL and the Airpark are a major center for corporate biz activities, flight training, medical transport/evacuation, aircraft building and aerial tours.
